About your breast screening service :: Central & East London Breast Screening Service
We are in the process of centralising the Breast Screening booking system across the London NHS Breast Screening Programme and soon we will have a new centralised hub where you will be able to change your appointments online. For general appointment enquires or to change your appointment please contact us on 020 3758 2024.

Information in other languages

Information about breast screening should be available to everybody. This area of the website lets you change information into the different languages that are commonly spoken in London.

The website uses a tool called 'Google translate' to automatically change one language into another via the internet. This is a valuable service, but it is automated so can present some problems with word for word translation. We have tried to use plain English on the website so it is clear and easy to read, and the automated translation makes it accessible to many more people.

If you require further language assistance, please contact The Barts and the London health advocacy service on

About your breast screening service

Our goal? Making the service accessible, friendly, efficient and valuable to you.

The Central & East London Breast Screening Service provides breast screening services for women in Camden, Hackney and the City, Islington, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest (East and North Central London) who are over
50 years old.

The screening service is part of a National Breast Screening Programme and is responsible for making sure you receive your appointment invitations, and that your screening experience is everything you expect it to be.

It is our aim to increase the survival rates of women with breast cancer, by diagnosing changes in the breast as early as possible.

Who we are:

The Central & East London Breast Screening Service (which from now on will be referred to as 'your breast screening service'), is the name for the team which provides the local breast screening programme.

The team is made up of radiologists, nurses, radiographers, administrators and a small management team.

Where are we based?

Your breast screening service is based at St Bartholomew's Hospital, part of Barts and the London NHS Trust. The service also manages screening clinics at many locations, including:

  • Mile End Hospital
  • Kentish Town Health Centre
  • Whipps Cross Hospital
  • The Whittington Hospital

There are also two mobile screening units, which can be taken to convenient locations in the community, if this is more appropriate.

What we do:

Every three years, over 120,000 women from Camden, Hackney and the City, Islington, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest are invited for breast screening. All the women invited should live or be registered with a GP in one of these boroughs.

Information from GP practices is used to make sure we invite the right women at the right time.

The screening service is responsible for making sure you:

  • Receive an invitation
  • Have a satisfactory experience at your appointment
  • Receive answers to any questions you may have
  • Receive your results promptly
  • Are invited promptly for further tests, if you need them
  • Are invited again at the right time
