The Central and East London Breast Screening Service is part of the NHS Breast Screening Programme. It provides free breast screening for women registered with a GP in the areas covered by Islington, Camden, City & Hackney, Newham, Tower Hamlets and Waltham Forest Primary Care Trusts (PCTs). The aim is to detect cancer at an early stage when treatment may be more effective.
Women aged 50 - 70
Every woman registered with a GP will receive her first invitation to attend for a mammogram at her local breast screening unit sometime between her 50th and 53rd birthday. She will then be invited every three years until her 70th birthday.
The screening office will contact the GP practice prior to screening to discuss the programme. Women aged 50 to 70 registered with that practice will then be sent an appointment.
Women over 70
Women over 70 can self-refer for routine screening by contacting the Breast Screening Unit for an appointment.
Anyone of any age with concerns about their breasts should contact their GP immediately.
